REFLECTION
Experience
Studying typography has been a rewarding and enlightening experience, focusing on type expression, text formatting, and type design. Initially, I faced challenges due to my limited familiarity with typography fundamentals and terminology. However, this knowledge gap motivated me to invest more effort in the module, allowing me to apply the gained knowledge to current tasks and future endeavours. The initial phase of the module was challenging, as I had to balance task completion and typographic theory acquisition simultaneously. Despite these challenges, I found this module to be the most enjoyable this semester. The well-structured organisation of the module provided a systematic and comprehensive learning experience, allowing me to acquire new knowledge and skills that were previously unfamiliar, broadening my horizons in the field of typography.
Observation
This module taught me the importance of taking notes and actively listening to feedback from Mr. Vinod and peers. This practice helped me retain important aspects and become more mindful of my own mistakes. Feedback sessions provided valuable insights from Mr. Vinod's experiences, from initial inspiration to final outcome. Paying attention to detail in typography, such as ragging and cross alignments, significantly impacted the overall outcome. Additionally, following a step-by-step approach helped me develop a deeper understanding of my work, guiding me from initial steps to final ones. Overall, this module provided valuable insights into the art of typography and the importance of attention to detail in task completion.
Findings
This module has opened my eyes to the vastness of typography and its depth of knowledge. Typography goes beyond just arranging words and encompasses various aspects that require careful learning and attention. By studying rules and principles like line spacing, kerning, and alignment, I have gained the ability to create visually pleasing designs that guide the reader's eye effortlessly, ensuring legibility and cohesiveness. The process of creating my own typefaces has taught me the intricacies of letterforms, proportions, and spacing, as well as the virtues of patience and meticulous attention to detail. Typography is not just about selecting fonts for their visual appeal; it's about optimising readability and comprehension of the text. Typography involves a delicate balance of design elements that work in harmony to enhance communication and make a lasting impact. This nuanced craft requires both technical expertise and artistic sensibility. Through this module, I have gained a newfound respect for the art and science of typography and look forward to exploring it further in my future endeavours.
