Project 4 / Self-Titled
For project 4, we were given the task of making a digital collage with the theme “Self-titled". In this project, we are going to create a surreal poster using Adobe Photoshop and then use Adobe After Effects to animate the poster into an Instagram reel/story. We are required to reflect our ideas into an experimental video by using Adobe Photoshop & Adobe After Effects.

INTRO
I’m Jia Zhen, a 21 years old Malaysian and I’m from Klang,Selangor. I’m currently taking my degree in Advertising and Brand Management.
PARAGRAPH 1
I am quite passionate in drawing, and is an avid reader of fiction books, especially the fantasy genre as I love to sometimes escape reality and have my head in the clouds. I also love nature and the outdoors.
PARAGRAPH 2
My dream is to be an aspiring author or artist and I was motivated by the fact that I love to express myself , enjoy the and fulfilment and happiness derive from the creative process as well as sharing my thoughts and perspectives with the world.
SUMMARY
I would like to incorporate both my dreams of being a writer and an artist into visual elements, leaning more on to the fantasy side, for my artwork.
Statement about my work
INTRO
My work is heavily is based on my love for the fantasy genre and the arts, combining nature and a fantasy world where I get to live in.
PARAGRAPH 1
I wanted to create something that based on the fact that I could live out my dreams of being in a fantasy world and create something magical.
PARAGRAPH 2
I want people to understand that it is alright to embrace one’s wonder and imagination. It is also important for us to find inspiration and beauty in the world around us and not take it for granted.
SUMMARY
“The key that unlocks the door to endless possibilities is imagination”.
References
I did some research on collage portrait, self portrait on Pinterest based on my biography and statement about my work. I was inspired by some of the artworks while doing research. I realised that there are various styles on doing collage portrait that I can approach before starting this project.
Sketches
Before I start to design my poster, I sketched out my ideas based on my biography and statement.
Images Used
I went online to search for some pictures and some photos that I've taken in the past to use for my poster.
This is a photo I took at home using my phone. I set up a big background cloth for my photoshoot and find perfect lighting so it looks like a professional photoshoot.

Firstly, I cut out my picture from the background by using the magic wand tool.

Then I imported the starry night sky and waterfall into the poster.

I went to the adjustment layer to change the hue of the starry sky to a more blueish tone because the previous colour doesn't match with the elements. Then, I used the clone tool to morph the waterfall into my dress because I think it looked more interesting that way.

I also added some more elements into the poster. I added butterfly wings at my back so it'll make me look like a water fairy because of my waterfall dress. I also added deers and add a little glow effect on them by using the screen blend mode tool because I wanted to make them look like mystical creatures. I also added more fog to the waterfall.

Then I added a rainbow and some hot air balloons at the background because I thought it looked a bit plain and I wanted to make this poster look like a fantasy fairytale.

WINGS OF ENCHANTMENT
This artwork is related to an imaginary fantasy world where I’m a fairy and there are natural elements incorporated into it with a meaning behind them. For instance, the waterfall symbolises the process of letting go negative thoughts and the hot air balloon symbolises freedom and taking the risk and opportunity that life has to offer.The message that wanted to be conveyed is that there is wonder around us and to never forget to embrace one’s imagination and creativity.
IG Reel Progress
Then I imported the final poster psd file into Adobe After Effects to create the IG reel. I have added animation to the waterfall, wings, fog, hot air balloons and stardust, so it looks more realistic and enchanting.
Firstly, I animated the hot air balloons by adjusting all of their Y position, so they would appear floating from their initial position to high up above.

Then I animated the wings by adding a 3D layer to each of them. I adjusted the Y rotation angle of the right wing to -40 and 40 for the left wing, and I repeated the process for every 0.5 seconds so it looks like it's flapping.

After that I adjusted the X position of the fog near the waterfall, make it move from left to right so that it looks more realistic when the waterfall flows down.

I also animated the waterfall to make the water flow down like a real waterfall by using the Puppet Posiiton Pin Tool. I pinned the pins on the waterfall which are the small yellow circles on the waterfall shown in the image below. Then I dragged each pin down to another pin so it has the flow effect. However it has affected the elements around it while dragging down so I used the pen tool to mask out the waterfall.
